A quello ci pensarono Latrell Sprewell (24) e Pat Ewing (20). Agli Heat non bastarono i 29 punti e 13 rimbalzi di Alonzo Mourning. Nel turno successivo, i Knicks vennero sconfitti 4-2 dai Pacers di Reggie Miller (34 punti in gara 6). Da allora, New York non aveva mai superato un turno di post season: sconfitta al primo tunro nel 2001 contro i Raptors, non qualificati nel 2002 e nel 2003, sconfitta per 4-0 contro i Nets nel 2004, non qualificati dal 2005 al 2011, quando subirono un pesante 4-0 proprio dai Celtics, e sconfitta per 4-1 lo scorso anno contro Miami.
Il successo ottenuto in gara 6 contro i Celtics a Boston (80-88, 10-24, 17-15, 20-28, 33-21) spezza finalmente la lunghissima maledizione. Anche questa volta, Marcus Camby è sceso in campo senza essere protagonista (1 rimbalzo e 1 persa in 2 minuti), facendo da spettatore ad Anthony (21 punti con 7/23 al tiro) e soprattutto Iman Shumpert (17 punti con 3/6, 3/3, 2/2). Gara che sembrava senza storia: a 9 minuti dalla fine, i Knicks erano avanti per 75-49. Nel finale, Green (21 punti) e Bradley (10 punti) hanno ridotto il gap fino a portarsi a -4 con 3 minuti e 30 da giocare. Paul Pierce ha avuto anche la palla del -3, sbagliando però l'ennesima tripla di una partita da dimenticare (14 punti ma 4/18 al tiro, con 1/9 da oltre l'arco, e 5 perse). Il solito Anthony, con 7 punti consecutivi, ha rimesso le cose a posto. "You should never play with any doubt out there on the basketball court,'' Anthony said. "I can't step onto the court thinking of failure. When you start second-guessing everything, when you start playing with doubt ... I can't afford to play under those circumstances.''
